Jury Service Exemption Requests

Information for Patients
We regularly receive enquiries from patients asking for medical letters to support exemption from Jury Service. It is important that patients understand how this process works and the limitations placed on GP practices.
Providing a letter to excuse a patient from Jury Service is not part of NHS contracted services. Any decision to issue such a letter is entirely at the discretion of the GP.
Important Legal Considerations
If a GP provides a letter supporting exemption from Jury Service, this constitutes a formal legal statement to the court. In some circumstances, the GP may be required to attend court and give evidence under oath confirming that the patient is medically unable to participate.
If the court does not agree with the medical opinion provided, the GP may face serious legal consequences. For this reason, GPs must exercise extreme caution when considering these requests.
Reasonable Adjustments by the Court
The court has the authority to make reasonable adjustments for jurors with health conditions or disabilities. In many cases, these adjustments allow individuals to safely and appropriately take part in Jury Service, even if they have medical concerns.
When Might a Letter Be Considered?
A GP would only consider issuing a letter in exceptional circumstances, where it is clear that the patient would be completely unable to attend Jury Service under any circumstances.
Examples may include:
- Patients who are housebound with severe or terminal illness
- Patients who are hospital inpatients at the time Jury Service is due to take place
How to Request Consideration
If you believe your situation may warrant medical support for exemption from Jury Service:
- Please contact Reception
- You will be asked for relevant information about your circumstances
- This information will be passed to the GP, who will decide whether a letter can be issued
Please note that submitting a request does not guarantee that a letter will be provided.
